Duppy Man provides a steppy roller of a tune with squelching b line.Subwayz tune sizzles like hot fat over a morphing bassline.Top notch.

Subtle pads alongside clipped and rhythmically busy drums eventually give way to a sound system-testing bassline. Drawing influences from dark garage and warm electronica, it's a deceptively devastating tune that weaves its way into the listener’s brain. The B side sees Pangaea exploring his sound further. Ignoring the current trend towards throwaway dancefloor material, 'Nest' is a texturally dense slice of meditative dubstep. Its warped bassline underpins dusty atmospherics and melancholy strings. 'Deviant' rounds off the proceedings in spectacular fashion, sounding like the South London equivalent of mid-90s Berlin.

As a small taster of the upcoming Hotflush compilation album Space and Time, this limited white label 12" presents a brand new track from Scuba, and a new remix by Vex'd of the Hotflush classic "The Knowledge" by Toasty. Scuba's "Inmost" delivers a minimal, night driving tune with a bit of an 80s vibe. One for the deep skankers. Vex'd brings a 2nd remix of "The Knowledge" to the table, following up on its first remix of the track on Hotflush's first remix 12". This time around their take on the original preserves its breakstep tendencies but still leaves it infused with classic Vex'd bass distortion. On this self-titled CD debut, Burial carves out a sound which sends the dormant slinky syncopations of uk garage, via radio interference, into a padded cell of cushioned, muffled bass, passing through the best of Pole’s Berlin crackle dub. Burial explores a tangential, parallel dimension of the growing sound of dubstep. Burial’s parallel dimension sounds set in a near future South London underwater. You can never tell if the crackle is the burning static off pirate radio transmissions, or the tropical downpour of the submerged city outside the window. In their sometimes suffocating melancholy, most of these tracks seem to yearn for drowned lovers. The smouldering desire of ‘Distant Lights’ is cooled only by the percussive ice sharp slicing of blades and jets of hot air blowing from the bass. Listen also for a fleeting appearance from Hyperdub’s resident vocalist, the Spaceape unravelling his crypto-biography. 'Travels' by Distance has a haunting refrain over thudding bass laced with an echoing vocal snip.Eerie dubstep indeed.

The latest release on the Scuba offshoot from Hotflush presents the very first 12” from a brand new producer, Gravious. Hailing from north of the border, he’s bringing a fresh sound to the dubstep marketplace mixing electronic sounds with the reggae influence of more contemporary dubstep producers. Wormsign defies accepted structural protocols and hits you in the chest with bass from the very first beat. Switching up rhythms and emphasis, adding echoed snares and searing hats, Gravious shows why he’s attracted so much attention on this one.
